✓ THE VERIFICATION STANDARD

What Verified by WCC actually means.

Anyone can call themselves a working stockdog breeder. Anyone can print a certificate. This is the standard behind every verified name on our directory: what we check, what counts as evidence, and what we won’t claim.

Is a vetted directory safer than Facebook groups or Craigslist?

It can be, if the directory does real checking. Not every directory does. Ask any of them what they check before you trust the badge.

A Facebook post or a classified ad is the seller’s own words. The photos, the titles, the bloodlines, all of it. A WCC Verified entry is different. We ask for evidence, then we cross-check it against public registry and trial databases and against what we know firsthand. Every verified entry gets re-checked once a year, or at renewal, whichever comes first.

Here’s what Verified covers: working-line parentage, a working record, and a reference we can call.

Here’s what it does not cover: health testing, temperament, or how any one puppy turns out. We say that plainly further down this page. Verified is one check. It doesn’t replace yours. Ask the breeder about whatever matters to you. A real breeder will hand over the registration number, the video, and the reference when you ask.

The badge is free to earn. It isn’t for sale, and no membership tier buys it.

01 · WHAT WE CHECK

The check on the breeder and trainer.

Verification asks two things. First: is there real evidence this dog and this handler can do the job? Registered pedigree, a working record on trial or ranch, or clear video of the work. At least one has to be real. Second: is this breeder or trainer here for the working dog? Do they have a real working dog operation? Abuse, sanitary neglect, or a puppy mill gets a listing declined.

FOR BREEDERS

Working parentage & demonstrated ability

  • ✓ Parents trace to a recognized working line: pedigree from a listed registry, or lineage West Coast Cowdogs personally knows
  • ✓ Working record documented through trial placement, ranch history, or video of the dogs moving stock
  • ✓ At least one past client or working reference we can call

A listing doesn’t need every box checked. Just enough real evidence we can stand behind.

FOR TRAINERS

Verifiable background & real stockmanship

  • ✓ Real stockmanship background: ranch work, professional training, or trial credentials (USBCHA, ASCA, AHBA, MSSA, or NCA)
  • ✓ Demonstrated ability shown on video working real stock, or observed firsthand
  • ✓ At least one past client or working reference we can call

Same principle: what the dog under their hand can do matters more than what the wall says.

02 · EVIDENCE WE ACCEPT

Any one of these clears the bar.

Verification isn’t a checklist of everything. It’s whether at least one form of real, confirmable evidence backs the claim.

  1. 1
A working pedigree with a lookup-able registration number
  2. 2
A confirmable trial record from USBCHA, ASCA Stockdog, AHBA, MSSA, or NCA
  3. 3
Video of the dog working real stock, plus an independent reference
  4. 4
Direct firsthand knowledge from West Coast Cowdogs, documented in the listing file
VIDEO MINIMUM BAR

Unedited footage, at least two minutes, dog visibly moving stock. Anything below that bar isn’t evidence. We ask for a replacement.

03 · RECOGNIZED REGISTRIES

The associations whose records we accept.

These are real organizations that serve the working stockdogs community. Anyone can look them up. Credentials from an unlisted association aren’t dismissed. They’re evaluated on their own merits.

Organization Breed / Scope What it proves Notes
ABCA Border Collie Working pedigree No health testing required; de-registers conformation champions
ISDS Border Collie Working pedigree UK/Ireland-based; ABCA accepts ISDS pedigrees
ASCA Australian Shepherd Working pedigree The Australian Shepherd registry. Confirm registered litters, not a conformation title
NAAKR Kelpie Working pedigree Pedigree-only, no health testing required
TMSF McNab Pedigree + identity Requires Embark DNA on file
HTCA Hangin’ Tree Cowdog Working pedigree + proof of work Requires photo/video proof of cattle work

05 · RED FLAGS

Grounds to hold or decline.

A WCC Verified badge also means we said no to listings that showed these signs. If you see any of these on another site, they’re worth pausing over there too.

✗

No proof either parent has worked stock.
No trial record, no working ranch history, no video of the parents doing the job. A working dog breeder can show you a parent working, or point to one who has.

✗

Selling the dog’s look, rarity, or size before its working ability.
Watch for “rare blue merle,” “mini size,” or “unique color” as the headline, before anything about what the parents do on stock. A working breeder leads with the work. A designer-dog operation leads with the coat.

✗

Titles, registration papers, or bloodlines we can’t look up.
If a breeder mentions a title, a trial win, or a well-known bloodline, it should be findable in a public database like ABCA or USBCHA. Claims that only exist on the seller’s own website don’t count as proof.

✗

Won’t share a registration number, video, or reference.
You are allowed to ask for these. A real working dog breeder or trainer will hand them over the moment you ask. Stalling, deflecting, or refusing is a red flag.

✗

Pattern of misrepresentation across multiple buyers.
If we get more than one substantiated complaint that a breeder or trainer misrepresented themselves (fake pedigree, no delivery after payment, dogs sold as purebred when they aren’t), we hold or pull the badge. What we don’t investigate: whether an individual puppy grew up wanting to work. Some do. Some don’t.

WHY THE STANDARD LOOKS LIKE THIS

“This is here to help someone who’s making a pretty substantial investment in a dog from someone they don’t know. It’s not a promise these breeders are 100% rock stars. It’s a check that they are who they say they are, that they’re producing healthy working pups, and that they’re keeping the lineage going. That’s what verification is.”

06 · HEALTH TESTING: WHERE WE STAND

We don’t verify it. On purpose.

WCC does not require, request, verify, or display health testing status (hip and elbow screening, DNA panels, BAER, or any other clinical or genetic screen) as part of verification. Verification is built on parent performance. The working registries (ABCA, ISDS, ASCA) operate the same way.

Health testing is a genuinely split question in the working dog community. WCC does not referee it, and does not imply an untested dog is less legitimate. A WCC Verified status makes no claim about health testing either way.

If health testing matters to you, ask the breeder directly. That question is on the buyer, and it should be.

07 · THE FINE PRINT, IN PLAIN VIEW

What Verified is not.

“WCC Verified means this breeder or trainer has demonstrated working-line parentage and working ability to West Coast Cowdogs’ standard. It is not a claim about health testing, temperament, or the outcome of any individual purchase. WCC does not guarantee leads, sales, or dog sales for any listing, verified or not. Always do your own due diligence, including asking directly about health testing, before buying a dog or hiring a trainer.”
